Topic: Concepts of print
Objectives & Outcomes
- By the end of this lesson, the Gr R learners will be able to name the author and illustrator of the story they are reading.
- The learners will be able to identify whether a word in the text is a text or an illustration.
Materials
- A copy of a book with both text and illustrations
- Pencils
- Paper
Warm-up
- Begin the lesson by asking the learners to look at the book and point to the page that has the text.
- Next, ask the learners to point to the page that has the illustrations.
- Finally, ask the learners to point to the page that has both the text and the illustrations.
- Write the word “text” on the board and ask the learners to say what it means.
- Write the word “illustration” on the board and ask the learners to say what it means.
Direct Instruction
- Explain to the learners that the text is the words in the book and the illustrations are the pictures.
- Explain that the text and illustrations work together to tell the story in the book.
- Introduce the concept of the author, and explain that the author is the person who writes the story in the book.
- Introduce the concept of the illustrator, and explain that the illustrator is the person who draws the pictures in the book.
- Discuss some of the different types of books and the roles of the authors and illustrators in those books.
Guided Practice
- Hand out a book to each learner and have them turn to a particular page.
- Have the learners look at the book and identify the text, the illustrations, and the author and illustrator.
- Ask the learners questions about the book such as: Who wrote this book? Who drew the pictures? What is the story about?
Independent Practice
- Have the learners work in small groups and choose a book to read.
- Have the learners take turns reading the book out loud and have the rest of the group listen and take notes.
- Encourage the learners to ask questions and make observations about the book.
- Have the learners create a poster or a project that represents the book they have read and share it with the class.
Closure
- Review the concepts of print and book orientation that were learned during the lesson.
- Ask the learners to share their thoughts about the independent practice and what they learned from it.
Assessment
- Observe the learners during the guided and independent practice to assess their understanding of the concepts.
- Collect and review their completed independent practice projects to assess their understanding of concepts of print and book orientation.Evaluation
- Use the observation and completed independent practice project to evaluate the learner’s understanding of the concepts of print and book orientation.
- Based on the evaluation, you can provide further instruction or redirection as needed.
